Equipment & Software

SJSU Student Computing Services (SCS) provides eligible SJSU borrowers (i.e., SJSU students, faculty and staff) with laptop and iPad equipment, including pre-installed software, for use inside and outside of the King Library.

The following equipment is available for loan from SCS (depending upon availability):
HP ProBook 6460b Laptop [2012 model] (32 each) , HP 6735s laptop [2009 model] (62 each), HP Compaq 6515b laptop [2008 model] (17 each) (All comes with power adapter.)

Laptop accessories (available upon request):

Mouse, Headphones with boom mic (These are NOT ear-buds. SCS does not loan ear-buds due to health risks. Users are encouraged to use their own ear-buds, which are interchangeable between personal listening devices (like smart phones, MP3 players, etc.) and the SCS laptops or iPads. There are a limited number of headphones available.)
NOT available: USB memory sticks or other storage devices (NOTE: USB memory sticks are available at the Spartan Book Store.), Floppy Disk Drives (we no longer support floppy disk drives because they have a capacity of only 1.4 Mb)

System hardware on our LAPTOPS:

All Laptops (HP 6515, 6737s and ProBook 6460b): USB ports,  DVD/CD drive , ⅜” Stereo Headphone jack , Built in microphone , Built-in wireless (WiFi) network adapter , Wired network adapter (RJ45) , VGA video out. 

HP 6735s and ProBook 6460b laptops: Built-in front-facing camera 

HP ProBook 6460b laptops: Built-in front-facing camera, HDMI out (HD Video with audio), eSATA/USB combo, 1394a mini Firewire, SD MMC memory card reader, ExpressCard/54 (not PCMCIA)

• SPSS (for statistics classes – the latest version released for SJSU use)
• Media Players (VLC (for playing most video formats), iTunes, Quicktime, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer)

Note: You have full (administrative) control of the laptop while in your possession, and may install any app you need or desire HOWEVER – (1) You cannot install applications that require a restart to take effect because (2) ALL DATA, APPLICATIONS, LINKS, ETC. WILL BE DELETED WHEN THE LAPTOP IS SHUT DOWN OR RESTARTED! SAVE YOUR WORK BEFORE SHUTTING DOWN! (Do not shut the machine down if you have installed an application that you need - and works without a restart - leave it on and plugged into a wall outlet overnight if you need the application and all its data the following day.)

ALSO NOTE – Installing purchased iTunes music on SCS laptops will use up 1 of your 10 “associated devices” which Apple allows you to co-install your apps and music on. If you use up all of your associated device allocations you cannot switch to other devices for 90 days.
