Library Cards for Class Visits

As a teacher you need to pick up Library Card applications from the local branch library at least 3 weeks before the intended visit.

  • Please have your students fill out their applications completely.

  • Students under 18 must have parent/guardian's signature on application.

  • You should turn in their applications to the library 2 weeks prior to the visit.

  • Their new Library Cards will be ready for pick-up at the library the day of the visit.

Please Note: King Library and some branches are unable to issue Library Cards for class visits. Please contact your local branch to see if it issues Cards for class visits.

Homework Assignments & the Library Back to top

Teachers, encourage your students to:

  • Understand the assignment.

  • Plan ahead to meet their deadlines.

  • Come to the Library prepared with paper, writing implement, memory device, money for photocopies, etc.

  • Know and respect Library rules.

  • Ask for help from Library professionals. If required materials are unavailable, your students may be offered an "unavailable materials" card to return to you.

Teachers, avoid common homework assignment problems. We encourage you to: Back to top
  • Hand out your written assignment sheets and phone or fax one, in advance, to the Library.

  • Give your students a choice of titles, or allow librarians to recommend substitutes. The Library does not have enough copies of a single title for an entire class.

  • Check our online Library Catalog for available resources before making your assignment.

  • Notify your branch library of assignments 2 weeks in advance. Lack of advance notice results in the first few students checking out ALL relevant Library materials.

  • Remind your students to be prepared to take notes or photocopy some materials.

  • Ask your students to make their own illustrations or stipulate the use of photocopies. Requirements for color illustrations may lead to mutilation of library materials.

  • Allow your students to use a broad range of resources.

  • Allow your students flexibility in the length of books they will use. Requirements of books with a specific length severely limits availability.
