Film Screening: Soul of a People
Soul of a People tells the story of the Federal Writers' Project, one of the cultural initiatives of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. Through this controversial program, thousands of unemployed writers were paid to capture a remarkable portrait in words of something less tangible: the country's soul. Soul of a People is a documentary produced by Spark Media, an award-winning Washington, D.C.-based production company specializing in issues of social change.

Wendy Duong Introduces Postcards from Nam
Author Wendy Duong introduces the Vietnamese translation of her new book, Postcards from Nam. The program includes art exhibits and 10 minutes of musical prelude introducing the traditional music of Vietnam.
The author will discuss various themes raised in her book, including the "postcards" motif, the interconnection of various art forms as recordings of the human experience and need for cultural identity. The author will also explore the interplay between Art and Life in the context of the Vietnamese American immigration experience. Program concludes with book signing and light refreshment.

Partners in Reading Tutor Training
Imagine that you could not read a bus schedule or interpret the directions on a medicine bottle. Please consider becoming a volunteer tutor for the adult literacy program, Partners in Reading at the San José Public Library. The experience is rewarding and exciting. You will be working with an English-speaking adult who is 18 years or older. One-on-one tutoring will take place within branches of the San José Public Library and other public sites in San José. Small group tutoring is also available.
Qualifications:
- 18 years of age or older
- High school diploma or GED
- Excellent reading and writing skills
- Attend 14 hours of tutor training
- Patience
- Flexibility
- Cultural sensitivity
- Sense of humor
- Three hours tutoring per week for a minimum of six months (twice a week is best)
- Enthusiasm!
The next Tutor Orientation will be on Wednesday, January 6, 2010. Tutor Training will take place on Saturday, January 9 and Saturday, January 16, at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library.
