University Scholar Series, Dr. Stephen J. Morewitz
Threats of violence-and especially of homicide-are a too-familiar part of modern life, paralleling stressful conditions at home, on the job, on campus, and in relationships. Death Threats and Violence analyzes the meaning and impact of homicidal threats, the means by which they are communicated, and their development from infrequent private occurrence to ongoing social problem. Death Threats and Violence is an up-to-the-minute work of particular interest to general and forensic psychologists, sociologists, clinical social workers, and those studying the current social climate in which such threats are prevalent. The author, Dr. Stephen J. Morewitz, is a professor in the Sociology Department at San Jose State University.

The Art of Protest, 1960-1970's Exhibit
The Art of Protest, 1960s-1970s Exhibit consists of 26 original silk screen poster prints documenting campus social protest movements. The pilot exhibit will open on April 19, 2009, located in the SJSU Special Collections & Archives Reading Room, and on May 4, a presentation commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Kent State Massacre will take place from 4-5:30 PM. A reception will follow at the San Jose Peace and Justice Center, located on 48 South 7th Street, San Jose, CA 95112.

University Scholar Series, David Vasquez
David Vasquez has a diverse background ranging from urban planning, sustainable architecture, health and biological science, photography, filmmaking, physics education, and cognitive science. In addition to teaching in SJSU's Department of Urban & Regional Planning Department, Vasquez also currently consults as a computer graphics specialist doing urban design visualization services for transit agencies and engineering firms in Northern California. Mr. Swan's Big Idea outlines both the generic promise of large-scale railway revitalization in America as well as selected key aspects of Chris Swan's Suntrain project proposal (www.suntrainusa.com).

You may take advantage of a free one-to-one 20-minute consultation with a member of the National Association of Social Workers, California Chapter. This is not a client/social worker session; it is information and referral only. Obtain basic information on topics such as:

  • Education
  • Emergency Services - food, clothing, housing and crisis support
  • Employment
  • Family Matters - parenting, childcare, elder issues and domestic violence
  • Health Improvement - mental, physical and health insurance
  • Immigration
  • Support Groups - men, women and teens
To request an appointment: Call (408) 808-2350 on the fourth Monday of the month. Calls will be accepted starting at 8:00 AM until all openings are filled.
